She was cantankerous. Demanding. 125 pounds of stubborn Saint Bernard. She pushed around our female Saints, Pebbles and Claire. She fought with Denali, our male Akita Husky. She would constantly bark for attention, growl if you tried to cut her nails, and lie on the ground like a sack of cement if she didn\'t feel like going where you wanted her to go. But what can you expect from a dog who had been ignored and mistreated her whole life?
And she was sick. She had lesions in her nose, on her tongue, and on both sides of her mouth. She had arthritis in both knees so advanced she walked with a disjointed gate. She itched and scratched and licked - most often at night when we were trying to sleep. She was almost always taking antibiotics, antifungals, and antihistamines.
And yet...she responded to attention. She began to trust. Slowly at first, and then completely. No one had treated her with love. It took her some time to adjust. But she did. And she blossomed. She learned to accept love and give it. When excited, she would scrunch up her shoulders as if ready to pounce. She would ramble across our backyard - her muppet-like ears flopping up and down - eager to rough house and play. Most of the time, she would merely look up at you with an almost cross-eyed expression and throw her head against your leg, inviting the head rub she knew she would invariably receive.
Sure, she was still stubborn. She had built up that habit over eight years. But what I\'ll remember most about Fozzy Girl is her running next to us down the street, her leash clamped firmly in her mouth, an excited rumble in her throat - a big, bounding, loping run at odds with the crepitus in her knees. I\'ll remember how she loved tuna fish and how she became part of the pack, laying contentedly with all our dogs, Denalis head resting gently on her back. I\'ll remember her last night with us, sleeping peacefully on a pad, a towel draped across her to keep her warm following a bath, her deep, soporific snore lulling me to sleep.
Despite constant trips to the vet and the antibiotics and antifungals, her condition never fully improved. At first, the lesions in her mouth started to respond to treatment, but then rapidly got worse. One, in particular, became necrotic and foul. This morning, we took her to the vet to have the lesions treated and the dead tissue removed. She needed surgery and wouldn\'t survive without it. While a blood sample was taken, Shanon and I rubbed her head and told her she was a good girl. We told her we loved her, then left her in the exam room, her big eyes watching us as we closed the door. She did not survive the surgery. It was all too much for her. The vet said she died in her sleep. He said it was peaceful. I hope it was. I wish I had been there.
God speed, Fozzy Girl. You were a gift. We\'ll miss you.
